Director: Rick Wallace
Sim Lab
(The picture is in black and white.  In the bottom left hand corner of the screen a message reads "4/2/63 For Centre Use Only".  The "film" shows a young boy about four or five years of age standing in the middle of a room surveying the work that it would appear that he has just completed on the construction of the Empire State Building using Lego blocks.  He looks at the copy and then turns and compares it with pictures of different views of the real thing that are  projected onto a wall of the room.  Satisfied he turns towards the door which has an observation window.  He walks towards the door. Outside the door, a head and shoulders of a man comes into view.)
Jarod: Finished!
Sydney: This one has only been with us for thirty-six hours and he's already demonstrating more talent than any of our others.
Jarod: (He knocks on the door, puts his hands up to the one way glass and tries to peer out.)  Hey I'm finished.
(
The door slides open and Sydney enters the room.)
Sydney:
(He bends down so that he is on the same level as the boy.)  Hello, Jarod.  I'm Sydney.  I'll be taking care of you for a while.
Jarod: Why?  Where's my mum and dad?

INTRODUCTION
(
Voice Over: -
There are extraordinary individuals among us known as PRETENDERS.  Geniuses with the ability to insinuate themselves into any walk of life, to literally become anyone.

In 1963 a corporation called the Centre isolated one such PRETENDER, a young boy named Jarod.  Locked in a controlled environment they exploited his genius for their "unofficial" research.

Then one day, their PRETENDER ran away. )

Anchorage Alaska
1996
(A helicopter approaches a tanker and lands on its deck.  Miss Parker is a tall, leggy brunette, wearing tight fitting clothes under a padded jacket and very high heeled shoes.  Sydney is a distinguished looking gentlemen, late fifties.  He too is wearing a bulky padded jacket and gloves.  Miss Parker and Sydney disembark onto the deck of the ship and are met by a sailor. He leads the way across the open deck towards the bridge.)
Sailor:  (Indicating the cigarette that she is smoking.)  Mam, the materials on board are highly explosive.
Parker: So am I.
(
She drops the cigarette on the deck and crushes it.)

The Bridge
(Miss Parker and Sydney are examining various items on the ship's bridge.)
Sailor: I never agreed with the company about flushing our tanks at sea.  I knew those chemicals had to be doing something nasty.  Hell, I'm glad that Captain Jarod turned us in.  You know I kind of miss the guy.  Although he was a little weird.  Everything with him was always twenty questions.  And always the same subject.
Parker: Which was?
Sailor: People.
Parker: (Miss Parker picks up a red-covered notebook and starts flipping through the pages.) This belong to curious George?
Sailor: Yes.  Everything's just as he left it.  The company made sure of that.   Say are you pulling my cork about Jarod not really being a captain?
Parker:  Thank you for your help. (She offers him a forced smile.  The man gets the message and leaves.)
Sydney: (Sydney looks over her shoulder at the contents of the notebook.)  What is it?
Parker: Articles about that (?)  village where everyone was getting sick from the contaminated fish.
Sydney:  Hmm.
Parker: He must have been in quite a hurry to leave all this behind.
Sydney: It's got to be intentional.  It's a breadcrumb.  He's trying to keep me close.
Parker: (Her tone mocking)  Your little monster needs his teddy bear, hey Syd?
Sydney: Jarod is not a monster.
Parker: Call him what you want, Dr Frankenstein.  Just tell me where he is?
Sydney: I don't know where he is Miss Parker but I'm afraid I know what he's up to.
(
Sydney looks at the front cover of a large text book that is lying open along with another.  The title is "Modern Surgical Techniques.")

Hospital Emergency Waiting Room
(It is a busy area of the hospital with lots of noise, action and people.  Walking through the centre of the throng is a tall, slender man with dark hair and dark eyes.  He is dressed for a cold climate, dark trousers, turtle-necked sweater and an overcoat.  This, we assume is Sydney's 'monster' Jarod, confident, not looking like a person who had been isolated from the world for thirty years.

Jarod comes across a man who is pushing his mother down a busy hospital corridor and trying to get instructions as to where to take his mother.
)
Son: Excuse me.  Excuse me.  (He manages to get the attention of a nurse.)  My mother's here for an exploratory.
Gwen: Ah, you're in the wrong place.  You want admitting.
(
The woman in the wheel chair is protesting loudly but in Greek.)
Gwen: Speak English honey.
(
Jarod has been watching the exchange with interest.)
Son: She won't speak English.
Jarod:  She says she doesn't want to be cut open.  She doesn't trust doctors.  I don't blame her.  (The woman looks at him.)
Gwen: End of the hall (?) .
(
The man pushes his mother along the corridor.  The woman in the wheel chair twists so that she can look at Jarod.  He smiles at her.)

(A young girl, on a gurney and wearing an oxygen mask is being rushed along the corridor a trail of nurses, ambulance attendants in its wake.)
Orderly: (?)  BP is 80 over 40.  Pulse is 110.  Rapid and thready.  She's cyanotic.
Gwen: Hold it!  Okay! Get Doctor Shapiro.  (They wheel her into a treatment room.)
Nurse: He's in OR 3.
Gwen: Then page Doctor Trader!  Okay, hold on sweetie, you'll be fine.  Nicole get ENT. Stat!  Alright fellows let's go.  (They lift her, using the blanket under her, onto the treatment table.)  Let's go.  1 .. 2.. 3  Hyper extend her head.  Where the hell is Trader?
(
Jarod has followed them into the treatment room.  He takes off his over coat.)
Nicole: I've paged him but he's not answering.
Nurse: Her pressure's falling.
Jarod: (He is putting on surgical gloves.)  Get me a 3cc size syringe and a size A ET Tube.
Gwen: Get security to get this man out of here!  (One of the nurses gets on the phone.)
Nurse: (Stethoscope in position, she is standing at the head of the table.)  She's going into respiratory arrest.
Jarod: (He turns towards Gwen and holds out the needle towards her.)  She's not breathing.  Do you want to do the trach yourself?
