UntitledSeason 1 Episode 17 "Keys" Writers: Teleplay - Juan Carlos Coto; Story - Craig W. Van Sickle & Steven Long Mitchell Director: Terrence O'Hara Transcriber: Tia Bell Glade, Florida (Sam is sitting on the hood of a car, his jacket held in one hand over the shoulder. He is waiting for Miss Parker who is talking to a man who stands behind a counter at an outdoor roadside stand.) Man: No, Gator Heaven has the finest gator wrestling in all of South Florida. In fact we produce more wrestling champions than any other roadside attraction. Miss Parker: (She looks over several photos hanging on the back wall of the stand. They're of different men wrestling with alligators. The last shows Jarod, dressed in t-shirt and jeans, holding an alligator in a head-lock.) That's Jarod? Man: Can you believe he mastered gator wrestling in less than a week? Miss Parker: A regular Tarzan. Man: Gave 'em all nicknames too. Called the one with the sharpest teeth Miss Parker. Been gone about a month. Miss Parker: Did he leave anything behind, like a red notebook? Man: He left something better. Said this was for you. (He hands her a miniature, plastic alligator.) Miss Parker: Beautiful. Man: Genuine native art, handcrafted by the tribe. Miss Parker: (She turns the alligator over, showing him what is printed underneath.) In Taiwan? Man: (He smirks.) Eastern tribe. Miss Parker: (She smiles, amused, before turning her attention to the alligator again. She finds a key inside the mouth of the alligator, which she extracts with two fingers. It is a small key like the one used to open a locker or safety deposit box.) Lovely Jarod. Another game? Man: Said if you wanted it you have to sign for it. (She looks at him witheringly and he simply shrugs.) Miss Parker: (She accepts the pen he gives her and signs for the alligator and key.) Thank you. (She attempts to give the pen back.) Man: Nah. Jarod said the pen was for you too. (She looks on the pen. Printed on it are the words "Dover Town Bank, Dover, Delaware".) Dover, Delaware Dover Town Bank (Miss Parker opens a safety deposit box. Inside she finds a medical report for Catherine Parker dated Nov 27, 1969. The attending physician is listed as "Smith". "Multiple fractures" is listed and also the tickbox for "depressed" is ticked. There are two colour photographs of Catherine Parker showing her face. It is badly bruised and she has a cut above her lip. She's obviously been beaten.) Bahia Grande Isand Florida (Jarod and another man, both dressed in Marine Patrol uniforms, drive up in a utility. They stop at a large alligator moving slowly across the grass and they both get out. Bartlett is carrying a rifle and Jarod has a pole with a rope loop at the end.) Bartlett: There it is. Jarod: I see him. Bartlett: Now come on bubba. We've got to relocate this prehistoric handbag before the hurricane evac. It's coming in pretty fast too. Jarod: Still a few hours off. It's hard to believe a day this beautiful is going to turn into a storm. Well if you're in a hurry I could wrestle it for you. Bartlett: What? The gator? Jarod: Yeah. Bartlett: You've lost your mind bubba. Jarod: No I used to wrestle for the Seminoles Bartlett: Florida State? Jarod: No, the tribe. (He hands the pole to Bartlett.) Come here girl." (He makes a clicking, calling noise and steps towards the gator.) Bartlett: Whoa, wait a minute, wait a minute. How do you know that's a she? Jarod: I know that smile. (He approaches the alligator again, making the clicking noise with his tongue again.) OPENING CREDITS The Centre Blue Cove, Delaware Miss Parker's Office (Miss Parker sits at her desk examining her mother's medical file. Later she steps out of an elevator where she is approached by Willie, Mr Raines' sweeper.) Willie: Miss Parker, you're to come with me. Mr Parker's Office (Miss Parker approaches the desk. She talks to the back of the executive desk chair that is behind the desk.) Miss Parker: Daddy the next time that you want to see me you don't have to send the welcome wagon. (Her father's chair turns and she's surprised to find Raines there, not her father.) Raines: You're here at my invitation, not your father's. You've been busy. Miss Parker: I don't follow you, sir. Raines: (He leans toward her.) I follow you. (He holds up a photograph of her standing outside the Dover Town Bank. He throws it on the desk in front of her.) What was in the safety deposit box? Miss Parker: (She takes a breath, reluctant to tell him anything.) Nothing. Raines: Let me rephrase Miss Parker. I know it was Mummy's box. What did you find in it? Miss Parker: (She avoids looking at him. She is very unsettled in Raines' presence, not the tough Miss Parker.) I was looking for answers. Raines: About what? Miss Parker: About how she died. Mr Parker: Your mother shot herself. (Miss Parker swings around to see a tall, distinguished looking gentleman who has entered the office behind her.) Miss Parker: Daddy. Mr Parker: Leave us Mr. Raines. (Raines exits.) Don't I get a hug? (She walks to him and he hugs her, pleased.) Been too long. So, how are things at the Summer House? Are the leaf coming back? Miss Parker: Slowly. You know how Spring can be up there. Mr Parker: Stubborn. Your mother always got impatient. Miss Parker: I don't remember that about her. Mr Parker: Hmm mmm Miss Parker: But I, I do remember this. (She hands him the medical report. He opens it to the photographs of Catherine with her bruises. He walks away from Miss Parker and closes the file.) Mr Parker: You look like her. Watching you, (His voice catches with the emotion of his memories.) in some ways she never left. Miss Parker: Daddy I want to know what happened to my mother. Mr Parker: (His tone hardens.) I'm disappointed in you. Miss Parker: You're disappointed in me? Mr Parker: (He is now angry.) Don't tell me you believe this crap. Miss Parker: But I remember that Thanksgiving, the fight that you had. And a few months later she was dead. Mr Parker: Don't let your emotions run away with you. I taught you better. Miss Parker: (She clenches her teeth trying hard to contain her anger.) Just tell me what happened. Mr Parker: I killed her . . . at least that's what I torture myself believing. When someone you love commits suicide you search for answers to the mystery you don't understand. That's what you're doing now. Miss Parker: (She sinks down onto the sofa.) I miss her. (She looks up at him, the pain evident in her face.) Mr Parker: You were young. There's no way you could know what she was going through. It was a sad time. I don't know why she left us. (His voice hardens.) Don't you think I miss her too? Miss Parker: Of course. Mr Parker: You can believe your father or Jarod - who's it going to be? Miss Parker: (She stands up and steps up to her father.) Daddy, I want a new assignment. Jarod is Sydney's mess and Mr. Raines'. Please put me back in Corporate. Mr Parker: We have our arrangement. Miss Parker: I know. Mr Parker: You were a quiet, uncertain little girl. (He gently places her hands on the cheeks of her face.) And now you're this . . . presence. It's time for my treasure to shine! I know what you're capable of. Miss Parker: Do you? Mr Parker: I do. And our deal stands. The Bahia Bay Hotel (There is a Marine Patrol jeep parked at the front of the hotel. In one of the rooms, Jarod sits at his desk. He is surrounded by garden ornaments - pink flamingoes - his latest discovery. He uses his laptop to check the weather and watches the hurricane image move across the screen. He stands and picks up a red velvet covered ring case. He opens it and removes a solitaire diamond ring from within. He opens it and removes a solitaire diamond ring from within. He places the ring back in the case and then puts the case in a postage bag. It is addressed t o Miss Parker at her residence. He moves to another part of the room and picks up a large rope net. He tugs on it to check its strength then picks up a pulley and gives it a test as well, a smile at the thought of his plan coming to fruition creases his face. He then picks up a disassembled handgun assembles it expertly. The Centre, Blue Cove, Delaware Tech Room (Miss Parker, Sydney and Broots are looking at Broots' computer monitor.) Miss Parker: Florida. I was there yesterday. Broots: I know. You just weren't south enough. Sydney: While you were away Broots and I revisited the old notebook from the Atlanta site, and we found some clues. Global coordinates written in it that lead us to& (He points at the screen.) Broots: (On the monitor, the swirling mass of cloud on the weather map moves across the map of Florida.) Hurricane Cassandra. Top wind speed of 150 miles per hour. Sydney: When Jarod was in Atlanta Cassandra was just a badly formed tropical depression. He must have predicted its course. Miss Parker: Jarod put himself in the path of a hurricane? Broots: Well someone from Marine Patrol Bahia Grande is using the Centre's access code to hack into the Defence Department weather satellite. It's the same one I'm using. (The phone rings and Broots answers it.) Tech Room, Broots . . . (All confidence deserts him as he recognises the voice on the other end of the line.) Oh, yes sir. Ah, right here. Hold on. It's for you. (He hands the phone to Miss Parker.) Miss Parker: Yes? . . . (She becomes very still and quiet as she too recognises the voice.) Of course . . . Very clear. (She hangs up.) Sydney: Who was that? Miss Parker: Personal. How fast can we get down there? Broots: Ah, a couple of hours, but they're already starting to evacuate people from South Florida. Miss Parker: Then I'll go with Sam. (She turns and walks away.) Sydney: Miss Parker, it isn't safe. Miss Parker: (She turns back to Sydney.) If Jarod's really on that island I have him right where we want him. (She walks out.) Sydney: Who was on that call? Broots: Mr. Raines. Bahia Grande (Jarod sits in a jeep watching Bartlett work on a hovercraft. He opens a red notebook and looks at the newspaper clippings: "Storm Has Detention Center Flooded with Haitian Refugees", "Haitians Accuse Officer of Bribery and Shakedowns", and over a picture of Bartlett, "Officer Cleared - Lack of Evidence", "Refugee Child Found in Swamp - Fate of Parents Unclear". There is a picture of a young Haitian girl.) The Bahia Bay Hotel (On a sofa in the lounge room the same Haitian girl of the photo lies. It is obvious that she is very sick. Her eyes follow a man who moves around the room collecting items and putting them in a knapsack.) Radio Announcer: . . . are frantically boarding up windows and packing cars this afternoon. Cassandra is expected in four to five hours, around seven pm this evening. Islanders are reminded that . . . Pat: I'm gonna be out, out front, but don't worry Simone we'll get you to the doctor real soon. (He leaves her and walks outside where he begins hammering nails into shutters on a workbench. Jarod drives up in a Marine Patrol jeep.) Jarod: Hey! Battening down the hatches? Pat: I tell you what, if I (?) butt(?) is gonna sell this place and move to Oklahoma after this. Jarod: For what? Tornadoes? Pat: Okay . . . California! Jarod: Earthquakes? Pat: (He laughs.) Somewhere not here. Jarod: (He nods towards the hotel.) How's she doing? Pat: Fever's not breaking. Jarod: (He sighs.) You'd better hurry up. Pat: Jarod are you sure you should have pulled Simone out of that facility? Jarod: They were going to ship her back to Haiti. Pat: (He lets his anger show.) I can't believe Bartlett would do that, just let her folks die in a storm! Jarod: Well people will do all kinds of things for money. I'll see that he gets paid. Pat: Jarod, forget about him. Come go with us. I uh . . . Jarod: What is it? Pat: I just, I'm not very good around sick people. I watched my old man have a heart attack. I knew he needed CPR or something but I froze, I just& .I watched him go. I can't handle the responsibility. Jarod: The analgesic I gave her should help with her fever. All you need to do is drive her to Miami. The doctors will take over from there. You can do it. (He pats Pat encouragingly on the shoulder.) I trust you. Pat: If you say so. (Jarod walks inside leaving Pat looking very dubious.) Simone: Jarod! Jarod: Hi. (He sits on the couch beside her. She brings out a Pez dispenser.) Simone: Empty. Jarod: No more Candy, doctor's orders. I'll get you some more as soon as we see your family in Miami. I promise. (He touches his hand to her forehead, checking her temperature, then winks.) See you in a bit. Marine Patrol (It is late afternoon and the sun is sinking behind heavy, black clouds, the early indication of the approaching storm. Inside the Marine Patrol building Bartlett is pushing a heavy cage along the floor. Jarod stands at a bench on which a fax and other technology has been set up.) Bartlett: You wanna help me with this cage? Jarod: I can't sir. (He turns from the fax machine, a piece of paper in hand. Bartlett examines a would on his hand that he got while pushing the cage.) I just got this download from the State Department of Law Enforcement. They suspect that the parents of the Haitian girl were killed around Harrison Marsh. (Bartlett looks up suddenly his attention fully on Jarod.) They want evidence gathered before Cassandra washes it away. Bartlett: Let me see that. (He takes the piece of paper and reads it.) Hmm. Why don't you finish up here and I'll take care of this. Jarod: I'll go with you. Bartlett: No, I can handle it. (He walks out unaware of how please he has made Jarod.) In The Car (It is now night and Sam is driving the sedan along a dark, forest-lined road. Miss Parker sits beside him but rather than focusing her attention on the road she uses a small flashlight to look over the details of her mother's medical report. She reads more details including "broken left thumb, fracture of clavicle, . . . thumb, right third . . . lumbar left rib . . ." She remembers the Thanksgiving before her mother died.) Flashback (Young Miss Parker is sitting at the Thanksgiving table. She's alone but the table is set and she can hear her mother's voice and a man's voice coming from another room. Both voices are raised, Catherine's in fear, the other in anger. Outside a storm rages and the shadow of the limbs of a tree make eerie shapes on the walls.) Catherine: No! No! You're hurting me! Man's voice: Come back here! (Young Miss Parker gets up from the table and slowly walks towards the door. The door opens but her memory skips to where she's running from the door to the window where she sits crying.) Miss Parker: Faster Sam. The Bahia Bay Hotel (The storm is gaining force outside as Pat is hurriedly making preparations to leave. He talks to Simone on the couch.) Pat: Okay. We're going to be leaving here in just a few minutes, okay? (He goes into the kitchen where he takes a gun out of a cookie pot, looks at it, then decides to leave it behind. He puts it back and hoists the packed bag over his shoulder.) Harrison Marsh (Bartlett is searching the ground with a flashlight. Jarod moves up behind him.) Jarod: Boo. Bartlett: Damn it! You scared the hell out of me! (Bartlett is suddenly pulled into the air and held there by a strong rope net.) Jarod: I'm sorry. Bartlett: Hey, hey bubba, what the hell is this? Don't just stand there, cut me out of this. Jarod: Cut you out? I spent a long time making that thing. Bartlett: You rigged this net? Jarod: Think of it as a bag. A trash bag. Bartlett: (He pulls his gun.) You cut me out of this now or I'm gonna blow you away. Jarod: Most criminals, they smuggle drugs or stolen cars. Bartlett: You do it! Jarod: You trade in human life. You smuggle Haitians and then you charge their families in Miami. (Bartlett tries to shoot but nothing happens. Jarod ignores him.) Once you get them here you raise the price. Now that's ransom, pure and simple. If they can't afford to pay well you just let them die in a storm. Kinda like the one that's coming now. Bartlett: You got no proof or nothin'! Jarod: I sent it to the State Department of Law Enforcement. Simone's family, they just wanted to start a new life. But you took that away from them and now that little girl& .she doesn't have a Mum and Dad because you locked them out here in a shack to die in a storm. As the shack collapsed around them her parents threw themselves on their daughter! They died trying to save her life! Do you know what it's like to grow up without parents? (He starts to leave.) Bartlett: Hey! Hey! Bubba wait! You can't leave me out here. This hurricane will kill me. Jarod: Oh no it won't. You're about three miles north of the damage path. (He licks his finger and holds it in the air.) At least I think so . . . bubba. (He leaves Bartlett to his fate.) Bartlett: HEY!!! Come back Jarod! You can't leave me here! You're dead! You're dead you son of a- Jarod! The Bahia Grande Hotel (Rain is falling heavily and the trees are whipped by wind. Jarod drives up in his jeep, gets out and runs inside.) Radio Announcer: This is the Emergency Broadcast System. Hurricane Cassandra is making five miles per hour along the island's shore. Winds are at 150 miles per hour. Evacuation to Bahia Grande has been completed. Remaining residents are advised to seek shelter in the centre of a safe, secure structure . . . (Jarod finds Pat sitting on the sofa with Simone cradled in his arms.) Pat: I'm sorry Jarod. Jarod: What happened? Pat: I've got good news and bad. The bridge is washed away, power's out, phone lines are down. We're just going to have to ride out the storm here. Jarod: What's the good news? Miss Parker: That is the good news. (He turns to find Miss Parker and Sam. Sam is pointing a gun at him and Miss Parker is beaming. Jarod is silent.) The Centre Blue Cove, Delaware Sim Lab Sydney: The pilot had to evacuate. He lost contact with Miss Parker twenty minutes ago. Television: Thank you for making us South Florida's choice for news. Broots: Feed's up. Television: Our top story is - who else? - Cassandra, who's top winds have now been upgraded to 175 miles an hour. Cassandra has veered thirty degrees north-north-east and it looks like Bahia Grande will bear the brunt of Cassandra's fury. (Images on the television show near horizontal rain and palm trees whipped by the savage wind.) Broots: Cassandra hasn't met Miss Parker. Sydney: I hope they're all right. The Bahia Grande Hotel (Miss Parker pops a champagne bottle, startling Pat and causing him to turn and look at her. She pours some into a glass. Jarod sits on a stool with his wrists handcuffed behind his back. Pat and Simone are on the couch and Sam, holding his gun, settles into a chair behind them.) Miss Parker: After all those dead ends all I needed was a little help from Cassandra. To women. Hell hath no fury. (She holds up her glass in a toast to the storm.) Jarod: That isn't good for your ulcer. Miss Parker: Neither are you. (She sips at the frothy bubbles.) Jarod: Don't underestimate the power of Cassandra. Her winds are probably peaking at 175 miles per hour. Miss Parker: This place will hold. (She strolls past him to face him.) Jarod: Just in case it doesn't, why don't you tell me who my parents are? Tell me who I am. (She stops and listens, amazed at his audacity.) Miss Parker: Maybe I should send you to every YMCA in the country first, or lock you in the Base Motel (?) with Sydney and Broots. Jarod: (He smiles, knowingly.) This is about that strip search in Las Vegas isn't it? Come on. You got me. Why don't you tell me? Miss Parker: (She walks up to him and whispers mockingly in his ear.) You shouldn't have wasted your time helping the down trodden. Jarod: I haven't wasted my freedom. Miss Parker: Jarod you were wrestling an alligator. (She laughs. Jarod smiles too.) Jarod: (Jarod turns his head slightly so as to look at her over his shoulder, all joking over.) So you got the medical report. Miss Parker: (About to take a sip of champagne, she stops at his words.) I have what you forgot. (?) (Sam watches the exchange, unmoving, on a straight back chair near Pat and Simone, his arms folded across his chest.) Jarod: You didn't come here just to retrieve me. You want answers. Miss Parker: I have everything I need. Daddy's going to be thrilled. Jarod: But Daddy doesn't give you what you want, does he? What did Daddy tell you about your mother's . . . suicide? (She spins and faces him, anger evident in the tenseness of her body.) Miss Parker: That's enough! (She starts to pace.) Jarod: I'll bet it wasn't the truth. Miss Parker: (She turns and faces him, almost yelling at Jarod now.) Yeah well the truth is you're a liar! Always have been. You faked that medical report. Jarod: (He remains calm.) I wouldn't fake something like that. I didn't want to have to tell you, but I couldn't withhold a key to your past. Miss Parker: (For a moment she seems to believe him, but it doesn't last.) Nice try. (She backs up, looking him ove.r) You're so in control. So ahead of the game aren't you? Not any more. Now I make the rules. (Her words are punctuated by lightning and thunder.) Harrison Marsh (Bartlett is still struggling with the net while the storm rages around him. He begins chewing at the rope.) The Bahia Grande Hotel (Miss Parker is still standing watching over her captive, flipping idly through the latest version of the red notebook. She looks over at Pat, who is wiping Simone's forehead with a damp cloth.) Pat: Hold on. You're such a good girl . . . Miss Parker: (She holds out the red notebook towards Jarod and adopts her most mocking tone.) How many merit badges did this get you? Jarod: You don't think that rescuing children is a good idea? Your mother certainly thought it was. (There is a loud crashing sound from outside.) The leading edge just passed. The eye wall should hit in about seventeen minutes. That's the worst part. Pat: Wake up! (He turns to Jarod, the panic and fear evident in the tone of his voice.) Jarod I can't wake her. Jarod: Let me take a look at her. Miss Parker: Sam can do it. (She is irritated.) Jarod: Sam is not a doctor. I - I can be. Please! (Miss Parker stares at Jarod who glances worriedly towards Simone who lies shivering on the sofa. Miss Parker also turns and looks at the sick child her arms still folded across her chest. Finally she gives Sam the smallest indication with her head that she agrees to Jarod's request and Sam quickly stands, moves to Jarod and releases him.) Pat: Simone, sweety, come on. Simone. Talk to me. Come on, Simone. Miss Parker: If he tries anything shoot him in the foot. (Jarod sits with Simone and tries to get a response.) Jarod: Simone? Simone can you hear me? (He takes her pulse.) Flashback (Young Miss Parker walks towards the closed door. As she nears it the door starts to open slowly. She hears her mother's voice again.) Catherine: No. No. Stop, you're hurting me. Mans' Voice: Come back here! (Miss Parker is called back to the present by the urgency of Jarod's voice.) Jarod: She's dipping in and out of consciousness. I need to get her fever down. (He takes a cloth, dips it in a container of ice water and places it on Simone's forehead.) The infection is spreading. She needs penicillin. I can get some from the first aid kits at the boathouse. Pat: Across the island? Miss Parker: After the storm while you're on your way to Blue Cove. I'll make sure she gets the best specialist. Jarod: There is no time. She could go into septic shock or a coma, I need to get her the penicillin. The eye should be here in a few minutes. That will give us about twenty minutes of calm. Pat: How can you be so sure? Miss Parker: (Miss Parker doesn't move her gaze away from Jarod.) Jarod used to be a weather man in Puerto Rico. (Simone asks for her Mama and Papa, then says something else. Jarod responds in her own language.) Miss Parker: What's she saying? Jarod: She's looking for the sky. Her mother told her before she died that she would look after her from the sky, that the sun and the moon would be her eyes. (He stands up.) I'm going to the boat house. (Parker whips out her gun and holds it on him.) Are you going to let her die? Miss Parker: Sam, cuff him. (Sam takes Jarod's hands and snaps the cuffs around his wrists as Jarod watches Miss Parker.) I'm going with you. Jarod: Pat, try to keep her temperature under control while I'm gone. I'm counting on you. So is she. (Jarod and Parker walk out, leaving Pat and Simone alone with Sam.) In the Car (Miss Parker drives the car through the storm with Jarod sitting handcuffed beside her.) Jarod: You're doing the right thing. Miss Parker: Call me Mother Theresa from now on. Jarod: It doesn't suit you. Miss Parker: What? Jarod: This façade you put up. You try to act like your father but he's not who you are. Miss Parker: This is business Jarod not personal, no matter how hard you try and make it that way. Jarod: It's personal to me. Miss Parker: Then why can't you leave my mother out of it? Jarod: Because she tried to rescue me from your father. (Parker is surprised but has to brake suddenly because a tree has fallen across the road.) Miss Parker: What now? Jarod: It's less than a mile. If we move fast we'll beat the eye. Sure would be a lot easier without these. (He raises his handcuffed wrists) Miss Parker: You try anything and I'll put a bullet through your knee. (She unlocks the handcuffs.) Jarod: I thought it was my foot. (He smiles but she can only return a stony glare. They both get out of the car into the rain. Parker has her gun out and watches him warily as he steps over the fallen tree. She follows.) The Bahia Bay Hotel (Outside the Hotel the storm rages on. Inside, the storm that is Simone's fever rages as well. Pat gently washes her face.) Pat: The fever's not breaking. Come on kiddo. Work with me. (He looks at Sam.) Why are you after Jarod? Sam: Shut up and wash the kid! Pat: I need more ice. Sam: I'll get it. (He leaves Pat and goes to get the ice.) Marine Patrol (Jarod is in a back room while Miss Parker paces in the main part of the building. She steps up to the doorway.) Miss Parker: Jarod, what's taking so long? Jarod: I've got it. (He emerges from the room with a first aid kit. He looks at his watch.) There's still plenty of time. Simone's going to be okay. (They turn to leave but are stopped in their tracks by the sound of Bartlett pumping a round into the chamber of a shotgun and firing into the ceiling. He aims the weapon at them. Bartlett's face is cut in several places and his teeth are bloody. He is soaked to his skin.) Bartlett: Honey, I'm home! The Centre Mr Parker's Office (Mr Parker sits at his desk chair watching a news telecast on the television behind the desk. Sydney enters the office and Mr Parker turns part of the way around to look at him.) Television: . . . speeds of up to 160 miles an hour . . . Mr Parker: Have you heard from them? Sydney: No. I'm concerned. Mr Parker: So am I. Sydney: Oh you are? Mr. Raines ordered her into that. Mr Parker: (He spins his chair all the way around so that he can confront Sydney face-to-face.) You have a problem with Raines? Sydney: He is out of control. Mr Parker: Raines isn't. Jarod is. Tormenting my daughter with lies about her mother. Sydney: Lies? Mr Parker: You saw her last. You knew her condition. Her only option was suicide. Sydney: Mrs. Parker, God rest her soul, was manic depressive. Her marriage was falling apart, and of course there was the question of her beating. Mr Parker: Exactly what did she say about that? Sydney: I can't disclose that. (Mr Parker's tongue makes a nervous journey between his lips.) But you know pyschiatrists Mr. Parker; we write everything down. (Sydney smiles at his own victory.) Mr Parker: So do I. (Sydney's smile fades quickly.) Sydney: Your wife was my patient. The details of her sessions are privileged. Mr Parker: I have privileges Sydney. Sydney: I'm well aware of that. (In his own office Raines listens in on the conversation through a speaker.) Mr Parker: Anything else Doctor? Sydney: No. Marine Patrol (Jarod and Miss Parker stand with their backs to two of the building's support poles. Their arms are pinned behind the poles. Bartlett stops walking across the room to place a couple of fingers in his bleeding mouth to investigate the damage caused by the rope.) Jarod: That rope was tougher than I thought. It looks like it cost you a molar. Bartlett: Two. Now shut up! Miss Parker: You never had to clean up one of your messes have you Jarod? You should have met that cop you framed in Miami. What a whiner! Bartlett: I told you to shut your pie hole! Miss Parker: Listen, Cooper, the Centre will pay you . . . Bartlett: Shut up! Shut up! (He walks up to her, invading her personal space.) I don't give a damn about the Centre. Soon as this storm is out of my face we're taking a little boat ride out to the swamp but I'm the only one coming back. Tonight you two sleep with the manatees. < The Bahia Bay Hotel (Simone, unconscious, moans and talks in her delirium.) Pat: Sh sh sh. (He turns to Sam.) She can't keep any food down. Let me make her some juice. The vitamins will do her good. (Sam nods his permission and Pat goes into the kitchen alone. Once there he picks up some oranges before turning to the cookie jar. He picks up the lid of the large jar but Sam has appeared at the door.) Sam: Hey! Pat: You scared me. Sam: Stop wasting time. Marine Patrol Station (Bartlett carries a large and heavy anchor with attached chain out the door, pausing to look at Parker as he does so.) Miss Parker: (She uses a mocking tone.) Your crusade for the little guy is backfiring. How does it feel to face the consequences? Jarod: I spent an entire life simulating reality. Consequences, they feel pretty good. Miss Parker: (She slides down the post she's handcuffed to and sits on the floor. Her tone softens.) Jarod what did you mean when you said my mother tried to save you? Jarod: She was planning on smuggling me out of the Centre. Miss Parker: You were one of the children she tried to rescue. Jarod: She died before she could get to me or the others. Miss Parker: Others? Jarod: She had a list of seven children. The unlucky ones. Miss Parker: And where did you get this list? Jarod: (He slides down his own pole and crouches at her level.) The medical report wasn't the only thing in the safety deposit box. Miss Parker: The medical report is real. I remember my parents fighting that night. (In her mind she remembers the door of her past.) She went off the deep end. Wouldn't even wear her wedding ring. It was a bad time for my father. Jarod: How can you still trust him? Miss Parker: I never saw him hit her, ever. Flashback (She sees herself as a child again, walking towards the door. The door starts to open but again her mind won't let her see further.) Miss Parker: I never saw anyone, not that I can remember. Jarod: People repress memories, especially traumatic one unless something helps bring them out like a smell or a sound. (The thunder roars outside.) I used to sell power memory tapes on late night cable. Perhaps you missed that one. Let me help you. Miss Parker: (She snaps at him.) Thanks for the offer but I can take care of myself. (She cries out and Jarod winces as she dislocates her thumb and slips the handcuff over her now narrower hand. She puts her thumb back into place.) The Centre (Sydney sits watching a graphic representation of Hurricane Cassandra on a monitor. His eyes narrow as he hears Raines approaching. Sydney turns to face him.) Raines: If you were so worried about her you should have gone with her. Sydney: She only went because you intimidated her. Raines: Miss Parker is doing her job. I'm glad to see someone is. Sydney: (Sydney stands and walks up to Raines.) What happened to you? Raines: Too many cigarettes. Not enough vacations. Sydney: When you were Doctor Raines you were my colleague. I never detected this obsession. Raines: I don't have to follow the Hippocratic Oath any more. My only directive is to bring Jarod back. For that to happen, Miss Parker needs focus. Sydney: She has a lot of issues on her mind. She has always been a curious girl. Takes after her mother. Broots: (Broots enters, unaware of Raines' presence.) The weather service says the eye has just passed the island. We could, (He sees Raines.) we could, uh& We could be there by morning. Raines: Get a jet. Sydney: Come on Broots. We wouldn't want any harm to come to Miss Parker. The Bahia Bay Hotel Pat: (Pat holds a glass of juice to Simone's lips and she drinks slowly.) That's it. A little tangerine, a little key lime. Good for the soul. She's still burning up. Come on Jarod. (He stands up with the empty glass.) Sam: Where are you going? Pat: To get some more. (Sam allows him to go. Pat goes into the kitchen, puts the glass on a bench and immediately opens the cookie jar. It's empty.) Sam: Looking for this? (Pat turns to find Sam holding Pat's gun up.) Marine Patrol Station (Jarod is still sitting on the floor. Parker rises to her feet as Bartlett approaches her.) Bartlett: Okay, time for a little boat ride. Ladies first. (Parker punches him hard in the face and he staggers backwards. The handcuff keys fall near Jarod and he grabs them, undoing his cuffs while Parker and Bartlett are occupied. He stands and ducks out into the back room. Parker kicks Bartlett in the stomach and he doubles over. She punches him in the face four more times but Bartlett grabs his rifle and rams it into her stomach. Parker doubles over in pain and Bartlett points the rifle at her.) Jarod: Drop it. (He's free and aiming a flare gun at Bartlett.) Bartlett: (Bartlett is amused.) Hey hey. A flare gun? Jarod: It's going to redefine heartburn unless you drop it. (He gets closer to Bartlett, who swings the rifle, but Jarod blocks the move and knocks Bartlett out with the butt of the flare gun.) Miss Parker: (She is still lying on the floor, breathing heavily.) Where'd you get that? Jarod: I snuck it into the first aid kit when you weren't looking. Miss Parker: You were going to use that on me. Jarod: I still am. (He lowers the flare gun to point at Parker.) (A little time has passed. Miss Parker is tied with rope to a post. Jarod locks the alligator cage shut with a padlock. Bartlett is inside.) Jarod: Try gumming through this. (He pulls the first aid box off the top of the cage and turns to Parker.) And you. You're going to have to dislocate a lot more than your thumb to get through that. Miss Parker: Why did you save my life? Jarod: (He moves closer and leans in to whisper.) Because I still remember the little girl who gave me my first kiss. (Jarod leaves the building and runs through the rain with the first aid box under his arm. Miss Parker hears a banging and watches the shutters that bang against the window. It triggers her memory.) Flashback (Young Miss Parker hears her mother's frightened voice and glass breaking. The door opens and her mother is there, her face bruised and her upper lip cut.) Miss Parker: Momma. Young Parker: Momma! Catherine: It's okay sweetheart. Mom's all right. (She closes the door.) (Leaning against the pole, a tear runs down Miss Parker's face as she remembers her mother's battered face.. Young Miss Parker runs to the window and looks out it into the rain. A man is running away from the house. He turns to look back, revealing his face.) Miss Parker: Mr Raines. In The Storm (Jarod makes his way back to the hotel through heavy rain.) Marine Patrol Miss Parker: Hey. Hey! Bartlett: What? Miss Parker: Don't you people keep a spare key to that cage around here? Bartlett: Yes we do. It's in that Miami Heat ashtray on the desk. The trick is getting there. Miss Parker: Look. We both want to catch Jarod right? Bartlett: Ooo yeah. Miss Parker: So you just flip your cage over a few times. You help me catch him and you won't just get paid, I'll make sure that you get a . . . (Her voice becomes seductive.) . . . sweet reward. (Bartlett stands up as far as the top of the cage allows and begins to push against the side of the cage. It almost tips over but falls back.) Put some muscle into it. (The cage turns over.) Yes! The Bahia Bay Hotel (Simone is silent and unconscious. Pat sits with her, Sam watching nearby. Outside, the worst of the storm has past and the sun peers out from behind the clouds.) Marine Patrol (Bartlett has released both himself and Miss Parker. She rubs her wrists, relieved to be finally free. Bartlett removes the clip from her gun and hands it back to her.) Bartlett: So when do I get that sweet reward? Miss Parker: (She smiles.) Now. (She bashes him with her gun and he falls to the ground unconscious.) Helicopter (Sydney and Broots sit in the rear of the aircraft.) Pilot: Storm's clear. We'll be landing in five, Doctor. The Bahia Bay Hotel (Jarod enters carrying the first aid kit. Pat stands up to greet him.) Pat: Jarod. Sam: Where's Miss Parker? (Jarod ignores him and crouches beside Simone.) I said where is she?! Jarod: She had a date. (Sam is furious. He pulls his gun from his shoulder holster and points it at Jarod.) Sam: Drop it and stand against the wall. Jarod: (Jarod ignores him.) She needs this. (Sam marches to Jarod, and grabs him by the shoulder. Jarod stands up, looking at the gun Sam is now pointing at his heart.) What are you going to do Sam? (Sam pushes the gun into Jarod's chest.) You going to kill me? I don't think you have the authorisation to do that. (Pat has crept up behind Sam. He smashes something ceramic on top of Sam's head, knocking him out.) Pat: Whoa! Ha ha! Jarod: Thank you. Pat: I should have done that sooner. Jarod: (Jarod sits beside the little girl and prepares a syringe.) Simone. Simone: Jarod. Jarod: This will hurt just a little bit but I promise you it's gonna l make you feel a whole lot better. Simone: The storm is over? Jarod: Yes. It's over. (He hears a helicopter approaching and goes outside to look. When he sees it he smiles and goes back inside.) (Miss Parker drives the Marine Patrol jeep as fast as she can while avoiding debris from the storm, towards the hotel. The helicopter lands on a grassy area below the hotel and Sydney, Broots and two sweepers run out. They enter the hotel to find Pat tied to a chair with rope. As the door opened to admit the Centre employees, Pat starts to struggle. Sam is still unconscious on the floor. Sydney removes Pat's gag.) Pat: He's a maniac. A maniac! He tried to teach me a lesson. He thinks he's some kind of one-man judge and jury. Sydney: Where is he? Pat: That way. By the front desk, out, bungalow 32! Way, way, way in back! Outside (Jarod carries Simone to the unattended helicopter and places her inside it. Pat pulls his ropes off and runs outside. Miss Parker pulls up at the hotel entrance, g ets out and runs towards the entrance of the hotel.) Aboard the Helicopter (Simone is in the back. Jarod is in the pilot's seat preparing to take off. He starts the blades spinning.) Jarod: You ready? (The sun is now well above the horizon and the sky is clear of the clouds that blocked its view.) Your momma and poppa, they can see you now. (Pat runs to a fence overlooking the grassy area where the chopper is about to take off. The chopper lifts and Miss Parker appears, training her weapon on it. She doesn't fire, however, Jarod hovers for long enough to laugh at Miss Parker before steering the chopper away. Miss Parker turns to see Broots and Sydney higher up. Sydney shrugs. Pat walks away, smiling. Miss Parker pulls her hair back from her eyes before slumping into a crouch. The frustration is evident in the slumped form.) The Centre Mr Parker's Office (Parker flings back both doors to her father's office making a dramatic and attention-getting entrance. She is wearing her "power" suit and her body language says loudly that she means business. She stops beside Raines, although she ignores him at first.) Miss Parker: I was close and I learned a few things that are going to get me even closer. Mr Parker: The Status Quo remains? Miss Parker: We have our deal but it's not quite Status Quo. Raines: How so? Miss Parker: (She turns to face him. She slowly picks up his oxygen tube and pinches it closed, effectively cutting off his air supply.) No more surveillance. No more lie detectors. No more games. You second guess my work again, I'll put a bullet in that pet oxygen tank and they'll have to clean you up with tweezers. I'll catch Jarod my way. And once he's in the Centre I'm gone. That's the deal. Are we clear? Raines: As a bell. (She releases the air tube and Raines can breathe again.) Miss Parker: I'll see you later Daddy. (He stands. She kisses him. He's delighted with her.) Mr Parker: Good to have you back. (She walks out.) Miss Parker's Residence (She opens a parcel and finds the ring Jarod sent her. She reads the note with it: "My dearest daughter this ring was your great grandmother's. If something should happen to me I leave it for you. Maybe you'll have better luck. Mom." (She examines the ring with sadness in her eyes. The phone rings.) Miss Parker: What? Jarod: (He's reading a newspaper. The front page has a picture of Bartlett and the headline "Officer Charged with Murder".) Did you get the ring? Miss Parker: Yes. Thank you Jarod. Jarod: Did you find your answer? Miss Parker: I think I know who killed my mother but right now I'm more concerned with why she died. Jarod: (Someone is polishing his shoes.) It was for the children. Miss Parker: For you, Jarod. The way I see it she died (A sob catches in her throat.) trying to save you. Jarod: You're angry. Miss Parker: I won't stop chasing you and I won't chase my past any more. Jarod: What if it chases you? Miss Parker: I'll ignore it. Jarod: You make the rules. Miss Parkerer: That's just the way I like it. (They hang up.) Shoe Shine: Nice boots. Snakeskin? Jarod: Uh uh. Gator. CLOSING CREDITS Season 1 IndexSeason 2 IndexSeason 3 Index HOME
